Globalisation and the information society of the 21st century have caused a far reaching diversification of higher forestry education internationally. This impact is particularly prevalent on the African continent, which is currently experiencing a massive shift in forestry policy formulation and implementation. In this process of change it has become apparent that a newly graduated forester needs a suite of "non-traditional" skills, beside their classical forestry education, in order to be able to think and act strategically within this age of change. These additional skills must therefore empower them to work independently, have the ability and willingness for constant self improvement and thus be prepared for life-long learning.

The inclusion of these additional "non-traditional" skills to any programme requires the modification of existing curricula, and the radical adaptation of current teaching methods, especially with regards learning objective. Forestry educational institutions are therefore confronted with the challenge of making use of new methods and techniques to improve the quality and flexibility of the courses they offer, thereby improving the graduate's chances of success while competing in the job market.

The main objective of this study was to analyse the potential of Blended Learning as a model to meet the challenges faced by higher forestry education. The term Blended Learning refers to a concept that combines face-to-face education and e-learning. The research question was, if higher forestry education, under the specific conditions in the Southern African region, could be improved using Blended Learning. The results of this study supply answers to the following: in which form, environment, under what conditions and for which target group can the Blended Learning approach increase students' learning success.

To answer these questions, Blended Learning courses in the fields of Ergonomics, Forest Engineering and Forest Transport were designed and developed, testing different Blended Learning concepts which were dependent on learner specific conditions. Various tools, pre- and post questionnaires, concept mapping techniques, server statistics, as well as surveys of chats and discussion boards, were used to evaluate the program and its benefits.

The evaluation results indicate that the program was successful. Factors restricting the program success were mainly infrastructural and the individual learners ability and background. Learner restrictions were their motivation, media competence and learning ability, and socio-cultural differences within the groups of learners. Results also indicated that the learners learning ability and individual motivation are deciding factors towards the successful implementation of Blended Learning courses. E-learning and Blended Learning per se do not necessarily lead to higher motivation and learning success.

To discuss an "optimal" Blended Learning concept, one must distinguish between two scenarios: (1) the use of Blended Learning on a campus university, which includes face-to-face contact sessions with the students, and (2) the use of Blended Learning as a form of distance education, as a concept to combine existing resources and allow cooperation between different higher education institutions. Both scenarios require good coordination of the course process, along with clearly defined learning goals and a meaningful didactic adjustment between online and offline course components and modules.

It can be concluded that the Blended Learning concept offers the potential of implementing e-learning successfully in southern African and that it will be able to meet the challenges of higher forestry education. Despite infrastructural restrictions and technical problems, Blended Learning can link up existing capacities at higher education institutions and close gaps within the existing forestry education. Blended Learning does not require high-end technical online-components or learning tools. It allows for the construction of interesting courses and modules that support the learning environment, while making use of online communication and interactive learning components. Blended Learning is especially suitable to introduce learners and educators slowly and gradually to learning supported by computers and new media. The art of creating a good Blended Learning course is in the integration and meaningful combination of online-learning, e-learning and face-to-face education, thereby considering the specific and individual prerequisites of the target group and the specific conditions of the higher education institutions.
