This is the essential guide to FRED, the Freiburg Corpus of English Dialects. The corpus, compiled at Freiburg University from 2000 to 2005, is now available for linguistic research. The user guide is designed to give linguists some basic background knowledge on the database and provide the necessary reference lists. It provides information on the corpus makeup (the speech recordings, transcripts, file names and geographic areas), the text markup and orthographic conventions, as well as availability and copyright restrictions. The appendix includes a comprehensive text list and a speaker list with age and gender information on all informants.
