In this paper, a method is presented to compute the spatial distribution of surface temperature, net radiation and cold air production obtained on cloudless nights. The method is tested on the region of the Regio-Klima-Projekt (REKLIP) which covers the Upper Rhine Valley from Basle to Karlsruhe and the adjacent mountains.
The approach for this method is based on the assumption that, on cloudless nights with low wind speed, different characteristic patterns of radiation temperature can be obtained for different areas. It is a pattern that primarily depends on the relief and the landuse within an area. This characteristic distribution of the radiation temperature was derived from remote sensing thermal images obtained from LANDSAT TM on cloudless nights. This radiation temperature pattern is described by a relief analysis based on data from a digital terrain model, while data on landuse were likewise considered. Based on a fuzzy -cluster algorithm approach, the correlation between the synthetic pattern derived from a DTM in combination with the landuse and the surface temperature of the satellite image is r = 0.74.
The synthetic pattern of the radiation temperature is linked with the measurement data collected at automatic measurement stations. Within the test area, the data are collected at 36 REKLIP measurement stations, which provided measurement data in high temporal resolution. So it is possible to model the surface temperature for cloudless nights.
The counter radiation is computed with the atmospheric model LOWTRAN 7. Based on the assumption that the radiation balance at night is closely related to the production of cold air, the cold air production rates are computed.
Problems occurring with the collection of measurement data are as well considered in this paper. Further, an approach for the visualisation of large amount of measurement data is presented.
The model approach presented in this paper is relevant to urban settlement and landscape planning.
