Since the Renaissance there has been a competition between painting and literature. Throughout the 19th century, however, these two realms acquired autonomy, and the history of this process points to the role exerted by the writers when they exercised their art criticism and consacrated themselves in that period. Thus an alliance was created between writers (such as Huysmans) and painters (the impressionists), when both occupied equivalent dominated positions in their respective fields. Under the name 'Symbolism in painting', a whole group was created departing from a literary perspective. Through the decade of 1890, painters began to emancipate from the tutelage of literary criticism and to reivindicate the specifity of painting.
